As grand and beautiful as this home may be, it stopped me in my tracks when I took this photograph a few months ago for completely different reasons. There’s a lovely calm about it. A grounded, inviting quality that makes me imagine something gloriously comforting awaits behind that magnificent ink-blue door.

Is it a dreamy home? Yes. Possibly way out of budget for many of us? Also, yes. But can we create that same feeling in our own homes? Absolutely.

Comparison is the absolute thief of joy, particularly when it comes to our homes. With a bit of creativity, patience, and love, I genuinely believe we can all create some of that comfort and magic for ourselves, indoors and out. It doesn’t require the same house, the same budget or even the same blue door.

And please remember, nothing needs to happen all at once. A home can change gradually. In fact, I think some of the best ones do.

We’re led to believe, by the multitude of home makeover shows on the telly, that it all gets planned, works get done, and completed in its entirety while recovering from selling a kidney to pay for it all. Utter poppycock.

There is something truly wonderful about a design language that survives for centuries. Not by standing still, but by constantly being rediscovered.

The famous 16th-century ceramics of İznik, Turkey, achieved something extraordinary during the Ottoman era. Against a crisp, luminous white background, artisans layered cobalt blues, rich turquoise, vibrant greens, and that iconic, raised red. They shaped these colours into sprawling gardens of tulips, carnations, and curling leaves. While the patterns were highly disciplined, they never felt stiff or lifeless. The stems bend naturally, flowers lean, and the leaves seem to dance across the surface. It is exactly this balance between structure and fluidity that makes them so beautiful.

When I first began designing Iznik for The Odyssey Collection, I didn’t want to just copy a historical pattern. Instead, I wanted to capture its soul and translate it into something entirely fresh. The classic tulips, branching stems, and stylized leaves are all still there, but they have been lovingly redrawn and rearranged into a repeating fabric design. With a softer, more timeworn character, it is crafted to feel effortlessly at home in an English interior.

It does not need to impress strangers, photograph perfectly, or look as though nobody actually lives there.

The homes we remember are the ones with personality. Rooms layered over time, filled with things chosen because they were loved, not because they matched.

Because a beautiful home should tell us something about the people who live there.

I don’t think a calm home has to be a quiet one.

Somewhere along the way, calm interiors became rather closely associated with pale colours, empty surfaces and rooms in which very little appears to happen.

That has never particularly appealed to me.

For me, a calm home isn’t necessarily minimalist. It can be full of colour, pattern, books, paintings, old furniture and the things we’ve gathered throughout our lives.

Calm comes from something else.

It comes from a room feeling settled.

From furniture being placed where it makes sense. From lighting that changes with the way we use a room throughout the day. From colours that sit comfortably together and patterns that have enough space to breathe.

It comes from having somewhere to put your cup.

A chair in the place where you naturally want to sit.

A lamp exactly where you need one in the evening.

And from being surrounded by things that feel familiar rather than things chosen simply because somebody told us they were beautiful.

That is probably why I am so drawn to interiors that have developed over time.

I like rooms with layers. Old furniture beside something newer. Pattern alongside plain cloth. Pictures collected gradually rather than bought to fill a wall. Books that are actually read and objects whose value has rather more to do with memory than money.

None of those things prevent a room from feeling calm.

Quite the opposite.

When the practical decisions have been properly considered, all of that personality has somewhere to belong.
And perhaps that is what I am always trying to create through Studio Hallam.

Not perfect homes.
Not fashionable homes.

Homes that feel settled, comfortable and unmistakably yours.

Pattern doesn’t need to match. It needs to belong.

Mixing patterns is one of the easiest ways to give a room character, depth, and a sense that it has evolved over time. It is also one of the things people are most nervous about getting wrong.

The secret isn’t finding patterns that match. In fact, when everything coordinates too perfectly, a room can begin to feel rather flat.
Instead, look for relationships between them.

Vary the scale. If you begin with a generous floral or botanical print, don’t surround it with several patterns of a similar size. Introduce something smaller and quieter, perhaps a stripe, check, sprig or small geometric. Changing scale allows each pattern to be read separately rather than competing for attention.

Find a colour connection. Patterns don’t need identical palettes but repeating one or two colours across different fabrics gives the eye something familiar to follow. A madder red in a curtain might reappear quietly in a cushion, rug, or upholstered chair.

Mix the character of the pattern. Florals work beautifully alongside stripes. Geometrics can bring structure to something more organic. Checks and small repeats can act almost as neutrals beside more expressive designs.

Give pattern somewhere to rest. Not every surface needs to say something. Plain walls, natural linens, timber, stone, and quieter upholstery create the breathing room that allows pattern to have impact.

And don’t be afraid to mix periods or origins. A block-printed linen can sit wonderfully beside an old Persian rug, a ticking stripe, or an antique floral. The connection doesn’t have to be obvious.

The most interesting rooms rarely look as though every fabric was chosen from the same collection.

They look as though they came together over time.

Save this for the next time you’re standing in front of two patterns you love and wondering whether you’re allowed to put them together. And share it with somebody who needs permission to be a little braver with pattern.

A complete room. Considered in every detail.

Colour affects fabric. Furniture affects scale. Scale affects layout. Lighting changes atmosphere. And the beautiful armchair you’ve fallen in love with still needs to work with everything else in the room.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what we actually ask of our homes.

Not what colour they should be, what we should buy for them or what somebody has decided we ought to be doing with them this year. Something a little more fundamental than that.

We live in a world in which we’re increasingly encouraged to present the best version of almost everything. Ourselves included.

And I wonder whether, somewhere along the way, our homes have become caught up in that too.

This Paper began with a fairly simple thought about why home matters, but the more I wrote, the more it became about something else entirely: belonging.

About the difference between a home that looks wonderful and one that feels wonderful to live in. About the things we keep for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with good taste. And about why some rooms make us feel immediately at ease while others, however beautiful, somehow don’t.

There are battered chairs involved.
There is a chipped bowl.
I have another little grumble about trends. Obviously.

But mostly, this one is rather close to my heart.

The colour you choose is only half the story. The light in the room chooses the other half.

One of the most important things to understand about colour is that we never see it in isolation. We see it through light, and as that light changes, our perception of colour changes with it.

A paint colour that looks beautifully balanced in one room can appear quite different in another.

Orientation plays a part. North-facing rooms tend to receive cooler, indirect natural light, while south-facing rooms generally enjoy warmer, stronger light. East-facing rooms are brighter and warmer in the morning before becoming cooler later; west-facing rooms often do the reverse.

But orientation is only the beginning.

The size and position of windows matter. So do trees and buildings outside, the depth of the room and the surfaces within it. Artificial lighting adds another variable: the colour temperature and quality of a lamp can noticeably alter how we perceive paint, fabrics and finishes after dark.

This is why I would never recommend choosing a colour from a small paint card alone.

Test it in the room itself, preferably on a generous sample, and live with it through the day.

Look in the morning. At midday. On a grey afternoon. And again, with the lamps on in the evening.

Don’t simply ask whether you like the colour. Ask what the light is doing to it.

And remember, there is no rule saying a darker room must be made to look lighter. Working with its naturally subdued character, using a deeper, richer colour rather than fighting the light, can create a far more successful room.

Good colour isn’t simply about finding a beautiful shade.

It’s about finding the right colour, in the right room, in the right light.

Confidence is one of the most useful things you can bring to decorating a room.

Not because confident people always make the right choices, but because they are more willing to make choices that are genuinely their own.

With so much inspiration available to us, choosing a paint colour, fabric or piece of furniture can quickly become uncertainty.

Is this colour still fashionable? Does this chair go with that table? Am I mixing too many patterns? Will somebody else think this looks wrong?

Good decorating does require judgement. Scale and proportion matter. Colour relationships matter. Pattern needs balance, and a room still has to function properly.

But there is rarely only one correct answer.

Some of the most characterful rooms contain furniture from different periods, patterns of different scales, unexpected colours and possessions that would never appear together on a showroom floor.

A beautiful room should appeal to more than the eye.

Texture is one of the quietest tools in interior design, but also one of the most important. It gives a room depth, warmth, and a sense that it has evolved naturally rather than simply been decorated.

The key is contrast.

A smooth painted wall becomes more interesting beside the grain of an old timber table. Crisp linen feels softer against worn leather. A tightly woven rug can sit comfortably beneath a generously upholstered chair, while glazed ceramics, aged brass, woven baskets, and natural stone each introduce another surface for the eye to discover.

Pattern contributes another layer of visual texture. A block-printed linen will read very differently from a plain velvet or heavy linen, even when their colours are similar. This is why a room built around a restrained palette need never feel flat.

The most successful layering is rarely about adding more for the sake of it. Instead, vary the weight, finish, and character of the materials already within the room. Combine smooth with rough, crisp with softened, matt with a little sheen, and new pieces with those that have acquired the marks of age.

And allow some restraint. If every surface demands attention, none of them has much chance to be noticed.

Texture should be something you gradually become aware of, the weave of a fabric, the irregularity of handmade pottery, the patina of an old piece of furniture, the softness of a rug underfoot.

Those details are often what turn a room that simply looks beautiful into one that feels wonderful to live in.
